Scholarship Information
The following is a brief outline of the scholarship program at the Hiroshima International
center.
Application period:
Applications are accepted every year from the beginning of April until the middle of May.
To apply:
After gathering together the following materials, please apply through the scholarship
department of your current college or university:
- An HIC Scholarship application form (obtained at your educational institution);
- A letter of recommendation from an instructor or professor;
- A report card, grade transcript, or similar documentation;
- Self-addressed stamped response envelope.*
*Please write your current residence's address, name, and affix an 80 yen stamp.
Scholarship qualifications
The following are requirements to receive an HIC scholarship:
- A residency status of "exchange student" as per the Emigration and Immigration Management and Refugee Recognition Law;
- That the participant be a university student, graduate student, researcher, or academic that as of the end of April has plans to study for at least one year at a university, graduate school, or junior-college within Hiroshima Prefecture;
- A person of exceptional character and academic ability;
- A person with interest in both international as well as local exchange willing and able to participate in their community. A person willing to endeavor to learn more about Hiroshima Prefecture and its many cultures and traditions;
- An individual who is deemed in need of financial support while engaged in academic activities. An individual not already receiving financial support in the form of a separate scholarship or other financial assistance program;
- An individual with Japanese language abilities deemed sufficient enough to participate in
exchange functions with corporations and other exchange organizations.
Number of scholarships to be awarded:
Contributing organizations:
- Corporations and incorporated foundations throughout Hiroshima Prefecture;
- Hiroshima Prefectural Citizens Association for the Support of Exchange Students;
- Hiroshima International Center
Obligations of those awarded scholarships
- Prompt reply after receipt of scholarship award notice;
- As much as possible participation in programs at the Hiroshima International Center
regarding the introduction of one's culture and traditions; active participation in exchange with contributing organzations via visits, letters, etc.;
- Submission of a report by the end of the following January;
- Participation in a scholarship award ceremony / two exchange banquets.
Scholarship award period:
From April until the subsequent March. One full year.
Scholarship amount:
30,000 yen per month (360,000 yen in total).
Important notes:
There is no obligation to return any part of the scholarship award. However, in the event that
any of the following conditions are discovered, any remaining scholarship monies will be cancelled and the return of already paid scholarship monies may be requested.
- Falsification of any part of the scholarship application; any similar deceit designed to unjustly obtain scholarship monies;
- A change or loss of any scholarship qualification listed above;
- Unacceptable performance with regards to academics;
- Any illness of condition that makes it impossible to pursure goals as a exchange student / academic;
- Failure to provide an acceptable reason for absence at either of the scholarship award / exchange banquets;
- Failure to submit required report; intentional delay of required report.
